Re:Zero Arc 3 Interlude III [To Each, Their Oaths](1/6)

*******Note from Translation Chicken*******
“Interlude III” is the final chapter of Arc 3, and takes place right after the ending of Episode 25 of the Anime.
If you haven’t watched Episode 25 of the Anime, or read Arc 3 Interlude II yet, it might be a good idea to bookmark this for now and read afterwards.
I’ll try my best to translate the Web Novel to continue the story from where the 1st Season leaves off. The differences between the WN and the Anime are negligible in my opinion, so coming here straight from the Anime shouldn’t be a problem.

Re:Zero Arc 3 Interlude III [To Each, Their Oaths](1/6)

—Lying on the bed, her expression was serene. To Subaru she looked like she was sleeping.

Her lashes are so long… he thought in a daze, gazing at her closed eyes. She’d usually make an effort to keep her face expressionless, but in her sleep, a softness befitting her age was showing on her cheeks. Come to think of it, Subaru had never seen her asleep.

She always woke before him, and slept after he did. Subaru knew, to keep herself resolute, she had always tried to bury the childish side of her, but that stubborn facade had collapsed so many times before Subaru’s eyes.

Be it surprised, or embarrassed, pouting or about to cry, or after opening their hearts her smile gleaming under her tears, there should be so many, so many chances to see them again—

[—Rem]

Even calling her name, caressing her soft, white cheeks, she made no response.

On the bed, deep in her slumber, the maid’s dress so familiar on her shoulders, the white headband that adorned her hair so blue and beautiful as the sky, were all gone.

The attire she wore in her work, and in battle — she had no need for them now.

[There you are]

In the room silent and stagnant as though time had stopped, someone called to Subaru.

Slowly turning, as though reluctantly, he looked behind him. It was a young woman with long, softly swaying hair. She wore a simple yet elegant dark blue evening dress, and even as she walked toward him, she seemed overflowing with grace.

But all her movements had a slightly muddled hesitation about them, which combined with the elegance of her person gave out a rather odd impression. Subaru cannot help but feel a sense of awkwardness when he is near her.

[Long Haired Girl: She…]

[Subaru: Still hasn’t changed. Even though I can’t do anything… I thought I could at least stay here with her. But that’s such a cowardly thing to say]

[Long Haired Girl: Still, this… would make her happy, wouldn’t it?]

Seeing Subaru’s downcast expression, the woman timidly tried to console him. But hearing this, Subaru shot back a stare at once fierce, bitter, and cruel. His senses sharpened at her words, his eyes locked onto hers. Without meaning to, it was already far beyond his control. Noticing his reaction, the young woman placed her hands over her lips, [I’m sorry], she apologized.

[Long Haired Girl: I said something I shouldn’t have, and hurt you, didn’t I?]

[Subaru: No… no, I am the one who should apologize. I was only venting my anger all pent up inside… If I behave like this, Rem will be really, really angry with me, won’t she? “You shouldn’t be hurting people’s feelings like that, Subaru-kun”, or something like that]

He shrugged, and said that softly in Rem’s voice.

In his mind, he heard her voice saying those words. A voice only he could hear.

His impression sounded nothing like her, but there is not a person left in the world who could point that out.

Against Subaru’s empty words and gestures, the woman sadly lowered her eyes, and held her left wrist with her right hand.

As if a shadow had descended between them, the room returned to silence.

…This familiar feeling… Natsuki Subaru shouldn’t stay like this, should he? Subaru shook his head in his heart.

To sink into the depths of an ocean of despair, is easy, even if only so the piercing anguish would go away. But it doesn’t suit him – as the man she believes in, as the man Rem loves above all the world, this is not what Natsuki Subaru should do.

Never.

[Subaru: …You were looking for me, then?]

[Long Haired Girl: Yes, I want to hold a meeting with everyone present, so I’ve asked everyone to gather in the lounge, if it’s alright with…]

Nodding with an expression like she’s just been saved, the woman got right to the point. But then she stopped half way through, and furrowed her brows rather awkwardly. It took a while before Subaru noticed this.

[Subaru: My name is Natsuki Subaru]

[Long Haired Girl: …I’m sorry, Natsuki Subaru-sama. I will be sure to remember. Even though I’ve been told how much I am indebted to you… Please excuse me, my apologies!]

[Subaru: It can’t be helped, can it? There must a lot of things you need to remember right now, don’t worry about it.]

As if to say she was very, very sorry, the young woman lowered her head.

Then, seeing her recover again with perfect grace, even femininity, Subaru cannot help but feel a sense of surreal incongruity stabbing at his chest. But even Subaru wasn’t brash enough to say this out loud.

Shaking his head, Subaru decided to put that aside for now, and stood up.

Turning to the girl on the bed, he gently touched the hair on her forehead.

[Subaru: I’ll be back, Rem]

Breathing softly, she really exists.

—Having been forgotten by all the world, this was her only remaining existence.

With Rem behind his back, Subaru turned to face the young woman.

[Subaru: The lounge is it? Let’s not make them wait, let’s go]

[Long Haired Girl: Yes, let’s go, Natsuki Subaru-sama]

Her head slightly inclining forward, softly smiling, she seemed at that moment like something out of a dream – her long, green hair, flowing with her every movement.

Hating having to admit this, Subaru turned away, hiding a genuine smile emerging on his face.

[Subaru: Thank you for coming to fetch me, Miss Crusch]

With this name, Subaru thanked the long haired girl – who seem to have become a different person entirely.

===

This first section of the chapter was a little difficult to translate, because very subtle wording can change the entire meaning and emotional impact of the whole scene. For example, “With Rem behind his back, Subaru turned to face the young woman”, I hope it feels like Rem still has Subaru’s back, even while asleep. If I translated it like “With Rem behind him, Subaru stood face to face with the young woman” it sounds like Subaru left Rem behind >_<‘

Once again I hope you enjoyed it. I decided to split this chapter by the Author’s section dividers ※, which becomes 6 parts. This way I can release a bit more frequently as soon as I finish translating a section.

The next part, 2/6 will be ready in a few hours is done!

  1. about that part

    >A voice only he could hear

i think this translaton sentence works better “The fact that too was something no one but Subaru could do anymore was sad.”

    1. Yes, that was an artistic decision I made. The shorter passage “A voice only he could hear”, I felt already conveyed the loneliness and sadness it was meant to convey, without having to explicitly state the words..

You are right, the original sentence:
      それももう、スバル以外の誰にも伝わらない行いなのが悲しかった。

      meant exactly:
“The fact that too was something no one but Subaru could do anymore was sad.”

But being an emotional passage, the long winded and complex sentence structure really becomes far too distracting, and there is no easy way to simplify it.

So I prioritized meaning and emotional impact in this case:

The “was sad” was already conveyed by the context and the reader’s emotion at that point in the narration, so it can be omitted(In fact I think the reader will feel more emotion without being told to there).
The “Something no one but Subaru could do anymore”, refers to playing back Rem’s voice in his mind from the previous sentence, so it makes more sense to say it directly here, making the structure far simpler and smoother, at the same time re-emphasizing Rem’s voice(always emotional to hear Rem’s voice….), and its meaning to Subaru(Rem still encourages him, and only him, even while asleep).

Another consideration is that when I translate emotional passages, I test variations on myself over and over to see which combination elicits the most emotion…from me… That one felt the most emotional for me so I chose it in the end.

That’s my process anyway, thanks for checking for me! I could use more of this kind of feedback, keep it up!

  2. I’m new to reading light novels so I’m sorry for the questions. Is it safe to say Rem is still alive here? And the long hair girl is Crusch-sama but she has a different personality now since the attack on her that severed her arm? Thank you so much for translating these btw you are a wonderful person ;w;

  3. Thanks for this! A question, isn’t this supposed to be “Chapter 6” from the LN? Is the WN presenting this as an interlude instead? Because the LN only has 2 interludes and 1 final chapter called “Respective Vows”.

    1. I don’t have the Japanese LN Volume 9 so I’m not sure.
I translated “Respective Vows” as “To Each, Their Vows” because I liked the sound of it…
But “Their Respective Vows” might have worked.

  4. Great Job, like everyone else, I too thank you! I have shared your page with close friends who are also into the Story and they were very grateful as well. You are right though, wording can alter so much. That line you quoted also made me re read. Perhaps you can try something like, “With Rem As his backbone” or “With Rem’s strength still behind him” or “Strength still with him”. I only suggest, however this is still great to read and should not really cause much confusion.

    1. Thanks for he kind words!
I didn’t want to be too explicit with the meanings, and just hoped people would pick them up subconsciously without the words having to be there. The literal meaning in Japanese was “Subaru put Rem behind him and turned…” but that sounds horrible! Put Rem behind him? D:

    1. Subaru’s new checkpoint is not in Interlude I, it will be later in Interlude III. You didn’t miss anything by skipping Interlude I, since Interlude III addresses everything from Interlude I and more.

  5. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to translate this amazing work! I really wish I could assist with these translations (as I know they’re very time consuming), but all I can give you is my sincere thanks :). Also, when do you personally think that we will delve into the awesome arc 4 (my personal favorite)? Thanks again

  6. Where do I read when Subaru kills himself finding out what happened to Rem? Is it not translated yet?

Btw good job on translating these, I feel that you have kept the meaning as much as possible 😀

  7. I honestly can’t thank you enough!! I hope you’ll continue to do this because many others have already given up on translating the LN/WN. This is the best we have, especially since it continues right after the anime! I can also tell you put a lot of effort into doing a thorough translation (based on that last part), so thank you again.

  8. Ok so at the beginning of Arc III Interlude 3, Part 1/6, I’m reading it as Rem is in the room with him, dead on the bed. Is that just in his thoughts or is her body actually there when Crusch comes in the room?

I don’t get this what is rem wearing is she naked on the bed. Or is it a metaphor that she will not wake up and she is wearing the same maid outfit?

I closly died through the void in my heart after i finished the anime but now i can spoiler myself for the next season and can be happy until it is over 😀 ( I know it sounds a bit … sad(?!) but it is just like everytime i finished an awesome anime 😐 …. this, anyways, is defnitly my favorite with Hunter x Hunter :D)

      1. A question. I heard that the japanese version of the light novel got something like 120 chapters in Arc 4. Is one of your chapter as long as one of them or is it a bit summarizing? (I want to read Arc 6 as fast as possible xDD (careful of putting spoilers :3))

      2. So i guess i have to wait until 2018 D; God damn it why did they have to “kill” rem è.é Literally the most loved character (#bestgirl) and she just becomes forgotten RIGHT at the start of Season 2

        1. Think about how long it took for Season 1 to air and you’ll feel better haha.

Arc 4 by itself is basically the entire Season 2, I plan to finish translating it by the end of next year around this time. :3

      3. Waaaait a second did you just say that Arc 4 is Season 2? Meaning there will be even more seasons then 2???? AMAZING. At least that makes Rem’s comatisation a little less depressing…

(Btw sorry for this bad english knowledge ^^’)

        1. At Arc 6, Tappei is only about half way through his vision of the story. He’s mentioned before that the plan is to go until approximately Arc 11, so he’ll be continuing to write for many years.

I’m not sure whether White Fox will animate future seasons, but ending Re:Zero at season 2 wouldn’t be enough considering how grand the story is.

  17. I don’t want to seem like a twat but I kind of called this even while watching the anime.

She just seemed too perfect, too good of a candidate and I was legitimately surprised to see nothing happened during the subjugation of the White Whale. I am very interested in seeing where this goes and I wish they’d make a second season so I didn’t have to read and rather saw it in anime form, grrr.

Thank you for the translation by the way.

  18. I was really confused with this new translation. You said that we should start reading from here if we’ve watched episode 25. I was thinking the girl on the bed was Emilia but I was greatly mistaken. Hehe but thanks for the translation! It’s awesome! Please keep up the good with!!

  20. Then you should’ve said “at his back” instead of “behind his back” which is more used for doing things “behind someone’s back”. also if you didn’t say it I wouldn’t have had any idea that you’d mean it that way instead of an awkward English sentence.

  22. Perhaps saying “with Rem to his back” or “with Rem at his back” would also work? If only I knew other languages I would love to do the work of translating. Although, I’m sure there are unending subtleties to be aware of. For what it’s worth, I think your translations are phenomenal. Many thanks.

  24. I think subaru can kill anyone by saying he can return from ‘death to’… Just like when he killed emilia

  25. “With Rem behind his back, Subaru turned to face the young woman” honestly, i did Not get the impression that she still has his back. i didn’t think twice about it either until you mentioned it. you might want to work on that line then.

there was a scene where Crusch held her left wrist…in the recently translated LN Vol 9, it went out of it’s way to mention “she held her recently attached left arm”

so there are some inconsistencies there that leave me wondering, but i guess this is from the WN so perhaps the WN never had such a line.
