Subaru heard his name in the darkness and saw a figure directly in front of him.
Just as his eyes began to adjust to the darkness of the ruins, her long, silver hair and her alluring, amethyst eyes flooded into his sight, and Subaru couldn’t help but call out her name.

[Emilia: Yes. Yeah, Subaru. ……It’s me]

Pronouncing those four short syllables and hearing her reply, Subaru felt his body on the verge of collapsing.

Their touch was soft and warm. He looked up, and saw her fair, beautiful face looking back at him. For a moment, he held his breath, and forgot where he was.
Right now, he was only resting in Emilia’s tender embrace.

[Emilia: It’s alright. I’m not suspecting you of doing it on purpose or anything. But even if it was on purpose, I still would’ve caught you]

Cutting off Subaru’s excuse, Emilia closed off his escape.
Rather than chiding him, she gently consoled him. For this, Subaru breathed a deep sigh of relief―― but it was only then that he noticed something strange about Emilia.

Emilia looked the same as usual.
Gentle, calm, a little aloof, full of compassion, and cute with a somewhat childish charm―― none of it had changed.

She was the same, usual Emilia from the peaceful days they spent in Roswaal’s Mansion.
And not the same Emilia who was burdened by the duty of overcoming the Trials.

Resting under Emilia’s gaze, Subaru frantically tried to explain himself. But before he could finish, as if she couldn’t hold it in any longer, Emilia burst out laughing.

They were in the middle of a conversation, and in such dire circumstances, why did Emilia burst out laughing?

Weaving those adorable words with her lips, Emilia’s smile deepened.
Through that lovely, enchanting smile, her sweet whispers clutched at Subaru’s heart. Listening to her speak of how much she cherished his letter and how it became her support, Subaru felt his heart burning so hot that it was about to burst.

But, what kept his consciousness from being swept away by that soaring passion was the sickening premonition in his chest.
Something was wrong. Something was strange. The sense of foreboding that he had felt from the start had never left him.

What is it? Something wasn’t right. Even when Emilia was so adorable in this instant.
Even though Emilia was answering him so sweetly.

[Subaru: Emilia…… how did the Trial go?]

[Emilia: The Trial……]

[Subaru: Yeah, the Trial. That’s why you came in here, right? I’m sorry you had to endure it alone. I want to apologize, but I also want to know what happened. Even if you failed, I won’t care, but the fact that you’re like this tells me……]

[Emilia: Failed. I failed, you know? It’s the first Trial, and I couldn’t overcome my past. I let you down and made you worry, I’m sorry]

[Subaru: Em…ilia……?]

[Emilia: If you really abandoned me, and left just like that, whatever would I do…… over, and over, and over, that thought’s been circling in my mind. I was reaally, reaally afraid. And so, when I saw you come back to me, I was really happy]

Although she had just told him that she failed her Trial, right now, the only thing reflected within Emilia’s eyes was Subaru. Her eyes were feverish, and wet, and fixed upon Subaru.
How Subaru had longed for the day when she would gaze at him this way.
And how he had yearned for her to call his name so warmly, and to look at him with such passionate, teary eyes.

Everything he had done up till now had been for a taste of the passion of this instant.
And that was why――

[Emilia: Subaru. Will you always stay with me? Always be with me? Because, as long as you are with me, I won’t need anything else――]

Subaru never imagined that when the day came for Emilia to sing him these words of blind affection, it would frighten him so.

[Emilia: The contents of your letter made me really happy. You wrote a lot of things so that I wouldn’t worry. And it took me a reaally long time to read them. You took the time to write it for me, and all that time you were thinking about me, it made me so glad]

[Subaru: ――――]

[Emilia: In the letter, you told me you loved me a whole lot. When you said it in the dragon carriage, I was reeaally happy, so much so that I wanted to cry…… and when I read it in the letter, I felt like I was really going to cry too. And then, I was thinking, I’ve received something so immense and precious…… and I’ve only just realized it]

[Emilia: So when I saw Subaru come back, I couldn’t help myself anymore. The little me in the deepest part of my heart was crying Subaru’s name. Then, I wanted to reach out, to touch you, and I couldn’t stop myself……]

[Emilia: Say, Subaru. Sorry for everything up to now. I’ve done a lot of cruel things to you. Even when I knew what you felt about me, I made you hold it all down. That was reaally cruel of me, I kind of realize that now]

[Emilia: It must have hurt, to hold all those feelings inside. I must have been so selfish when you were trying so hard. Even though I wanted to think about you…… to understand you, I couldn’t understand at all]

[Emilia: But it’s different now. I’ve always been thinking about Subaru. You’re all I seem to think about. Just like how you……um, told me that you love me, and that you’re always thinking about me…… now, maybe I…… feel the same way about you too]

[Emilia: I’m sorry. That was unfair just now. Even when you were scared and didn’t know what I thought, you still said it to me]

  12. Ok, so I read through and right now Im on the verge of crying my soul out. Why u ask? This loop won’t be the last one, it can’t be the true loop. I really waited a long time for Emilia saying all that, but as Subaru I can feel something is wrong. Furthermore it would be even worse if not, cuz then I wouldve betrayed emilia just like Subaru did with frederica. Thus like i said, if this isn’t the true loop, emilias words are wasted. Not yet perhaps, though already probably

          The previous loop when Emilia become a vessel it’s not related to her mental state, instead the furry of Envy towards Subaru, for speaking about RBD in Echidona space.

        3. At this point there’s no denying the connection between Satella and Emilia, but consider Emilia’s state. Subaru up and leaves and Puck won’t show himself. Emilia’s extreme separation anxiety shows itself here. It’s not envy, or at least on the surface it isn’t. She’s afraid of being alone to such an extent that her first instinct is to latch onto him, and tell him what he wants to hear, in spite of herself.

    2. Guys, I really think that, now, Subaru is in the second trial, I don’t know why but, I think Emilia has surpassed the trial. If I remember correctly, there were several ways to pass the trials, Subaru has accepted his past, but maybe Emilia used an other way ! Ps: Sry for my english !

      3. I thought about it too for many many chapters now. My only doubt is that there are way too many details in this trial, if this were the case. In the first trial, when facing his past, the number of people who appeared was really limited and made Subaru realize he was inside an illusion most of the time

  27. Chicken, all I can say is thank you so much for pumping out more chapters than usual. This chapter really made my day. I would go on for a while like I did in the google doc, but I hear some people theorizing that something weird is going on, or that all this might be erased. I hope this isn’t the case, because I’m sure a lot of us have waited for these words since day 1. It’s absolutely beautiful. Also does anybody know wth that “Mn, mn” thing Emilia is saying on the last line?

I’m also somewhat thinking this is the second trial, though that would mean that either Emilia passed the first one or she died, as Subaru would otherwise be unable to start the second trial so long as she is in the tomb and hasn’t passed the first trial. Also, I’m fairly certain it should be night time right now in the story, so that part is would be consistent with the trial conditions.

    Never thought I’d see the moment Emilia would become yandere. That’s more the witch of Envy’s style. Plus I really doubt Echidona would turn Emilia full Yan~Chan. So it’s either Emilia is having a mental breakdown from the stress of trial going. Dredging up her past she can’t face will just about make her crazy.
    And to be honest, we don’t really know too much about Emilia. I mean she’s obviously related somehow to the witch of Envy. We know she’s really old. Like centuries. Pucks her ‘parent.’ As she/he calls her daughter. But what else do we ~really know.
    I surmise that we’ll be getting some juicy backstory for Emilia~tan soon. And it won’t be what you’re expecting.
    …
    Or this could simply be Satella trying to woo over Subaru again by taking over Emilia’s body.

    and thirsting gods who play with the lives of millions and cause good men to go batshit crazy and murder everyone exclaiming BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD. This is getting pretty close (with a little more romance though) I recommend to anyone checking out the short story Love can Bloom

  47. I have a theory, albeit far-fetched. What if Emilia somehow died during her trial, triggering the snowstorm, and Subaru is actually inside the second trial. If Emilia was dead, then Subaru could most likely proceed to the next trial, now that he is the only qualidying candidate. Plus, the theme of the trials suggest that the second trial would probably have to do with the present; in this case, his relationship with Emilia could in some way be the trial he has to overcome. The only problem I see with this being the case is the obvious abscence of Puck, but it may also be that he hasn’t shown himself yet.
    Just wanted to throw that out there, and see if anyone else agreed, even though I’m most likely wrong.

  51. At first, the last part was a bit suspicious for me for suspecting its satella for saying “i love you”. I try reading the raw chapter of the web novel (I really dont have the skill reading japanese. just a bit of my understanding). i found out that in japanese, emilia said “suki 好き” meaning i like you instead of “itoshi teru 愛してる” satella said to subaru. so for me, its still emilia and not satella. but there’s a possibility that I’m wrong. its just my theory.

If she get’s through the trails, eats and has a proper rest and can still tell Subaru with conviction that she loves him then i can accept it……for now, her declaration of love is creepy and all too reminiscent of the witch of envy’s love.

    …..so much confessions.. my heart.. I can’t help feel happy for Emilia and Subaru. Emilia is really pouring out all of her emotions right now. From when she woke up scared because of Subaru’s disappearance, to when she became calm and at peace because of the letter, and of course their reunion while Emilia is embracing Subaru and stroking his hair, is very heart-warming to read about…
    But, this also brings a bit of fear to me. It’s either Emilia has changed because of Envy’s influence, like how she is a bit too passionate right now to keep saying “I love you”… or that Subaru is already dead or really about to die…since he’s so silent.

      It gives it that heart racy “this is happening” feel that you get when you are in that kind of moment.

    1. Then how about taking a part-time job near you? Spmething that would’nt conflict with your current academic schedule?

      I’m poor too, only got lucky to have my cousin to help me with my fiscal needs, but setting that aside, when i ventured to give away all my autographs(resumes…) to all sorts of shop(Mcdonalds), bam, i had 5 options to choose from. I even stated I had no working experience(it’s a lie cuz you know, assurance, but I actually have exp dealing with customers in my shop(cousin’s) and experiencing (and outsmarting) different types pf schemes that’ll ruin your pride as a shopkeeper. So yeah, just take a day to give away resumes.
