As if spurred on by some unbearable emotion, Subaru’s steps hastened.

After parting with Garfiel, Subaru’s walk turned into a sprint.
With ragged breaths, sweating brows, and trembling eyes, Subaru ran.
His sole destination, lit by the moonlight, was the interior of the Tomb.

This was after their previous conversation.
Having stated that he would not interfere with Subaru’s actions, Garfiel did not stop him.
There was no one left to rebuke him for venturing into the Tomb once more.

Arriving at the entryway, Subaru stopped to roughly wipe off the sweat with his sleeves.
Drawing deep breaths to calm his winded lungs, Subaru pressed forward into the darkness of the Tomb.
Since there was something he must do―― in the abyssal Citadel of Dreams that was Echidona’s realm.

[Subaru: If you truly wish inside your heart…… “I want to know”]

Then you will be invited. That was what the white-haired Witch had told him.
Clinging to that hope and putting his faith in those words, Subaru came here.

There was a mountain of things he wanted to ask, to talk about, to agonize over, and to search for the answer together with her.
Things he could only reveal to the Witch of Greed, so that she might show him the way.

What he needed to do, and what he wanted to do were now one and the same.
All that was left was some way to make it reality, some way other than deliberating alone.

[Subaru: ――――]

It was not that he didn’t feel ashamed about going to Echidona’s Citadel, dumping all his doubts and worries on her, and imposing on her good will.
And it was not that he wasn’t afraid that revealing everything to Echidona would violate the forbidden and once again drown the Sanctuary in Envy’s shadows.

Yet, even so, Subaru had hope.

Hope that the Witch’s guidance might be the key to breaking through fate’s dead-end.

[Subaru: Right now…… I should meet all the requirements]

He was so lost as to what to do.
And so determined to use any means necessary.

If the present Subaru wasn’t a willing and eager Apostle of Greed, then what was he?

Innumerable times would he freely surrender his life. And he would give up his pride too, if that was all it took to settle this.
For that was all this pathetic, useless, and ignorant Natsuki Subaru could manage.

[Subaru: I’m counting on you, Echidona……!]

Subaru steadied his breaths, and silently gathered the courage to step into the Tomb.
Making his way to the rectangular space that had already accepted him as a challenger once tonight, he scanned over the room, and proceeded towards its centre.

[Subaru: Gonna have to wing it with where and what rituals’re required, but……]

The second time Subaru was invited into the dream, aside from the desperate desire for an answer, he should have been in the same position as he was immediately after Returning by Death. There didn’t seem to be any special offering required.

In any case, Subaru kneeled down on the spot, joined his hands, and closed his eyes.
He envisioned the White Witch in his mind, calling out to her with the enumerations of his emotions, as if telling of his impossible future and his despairing desire to reach her.

[Subaru: ――――]

Just like this, time passed as Subaru waited in silence.
He could feel the Tomb’s cold air caressing his skin as cold sweat formed on his brows.

He wanted it. Desperately.
He yearned for it. Earnestly.

If he wanted it this badly, yearned for it this badly, and still couldn’t reach her――
――Then perhaps Greed is far too immense an avarice for mere humans.

[Subaru: ――u?]

Just before this faintheartedness could sink in, Subaru felt the illusion of a white light encroaching on the darkness behind his eyelids. ――Or perhaps, it was no illusion.

[Subaru: ――――]

White light invaded his vision, slowly, and slowly, eroding away the pitch-dark world.
Before he knew it, his kneeling body had fallen to its side, and he could feel his consciousness detach from reality as it was pulled into another world.

――His summon to the Citadel of Dreams had begun.

In the Citadel where Echidona was waiting, this time, he was determined to hold the conversation that would let him truly grasp the future.

That thought alone occupied his fading consciousness, as――

{――Witness, a present that was not to be}

The moment his awareness fell away, he thought he heard that voice.

※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※ ※

A sensation like a drunken stupor swayed Subaru’s nerves.

He didn’t know what happened.
His awakening came so suddenly that it was like when a channel was switched on a television.

As if having jumped to a channel of a completely different genre, it felt like his entire consciousness was replaced.
It was almost reminiscent of the sensation immediately following Return by Death.

The discrepancy between the wretchedness of the world where he died, and the one after Returning by Death always carved a sense of incongruity into his mind, body, and soul.

{――――}

When he tried to speak, Subaru realized that he couldn’t make a sound.
He tried bringing a hand to his throat, but only then, he belatedly noticed that he could feel neither his hand nor his throat.

{――――?}

Whether it was his limbs, his eyes, or his mouth, none of his body existed.
There was only his consciousness, floating in space, watching the world from above as nothing more than a point of view.

It was unnatural, like the disembodied sensation of being inside a dream.
But, he had a feeling that this wasn’t the first time he felt this way. Could he be dreaming, after all?

With those thoughts in the back of his mind, Natsuki Subaru tried to tear his consciousness away from the scene before his eyes.
But it was impossible.
For the disembodied Subaru, nevermind turning his head away, even closing his eyes was forbidden.

All he could do was watch―― as this scene before his eyes was forcibly burned into his mind.

[???: ――iar]

The voice was quiet, and hoarse.
And so weak that he could barely make out what it was saying.
But,

{――――}

He intuitively understood it.
With nothing but his consciousness, Subaru intuitively understood that “This is bad”.

It was a voice that he mustn’t hear.
A voice he mustn’t recognize.
Proclaiming something he mustn’t know.

But, regardless of what his consciousness told him, the scene searing into his mind did not change. It would not disappear. But only went on pushing, carving the “Outcome” into Subaru.

[???: Liar…… liar, liar liar liar liar liar liar……hk]

Within that repeating whisper, the previously inaudible word began to take shape, as if forgetting to stop, and interspersed with sobs.
A heartrending sight. His ear were filled with despairing grief. To take this into his eyes and to receive this into his ears must have been the greatest suffering in this world.

{――――}

Why was he here?
Why was he seeing this?
His failure. His mistake. His error in judgment. He wasn’t supposed to see it. He wasn’t supposed to know. He was never supposed to know.

――If I didn’t tell myself, “It won’t be like that”, I……

[Emilia: Liar… liar! Subaru…… you liar! You liar――!!]

Collapsed on the floor, with a flood of tears pouring from her amethyst eyes, Emilia cried out.
Like an accusation of a betrayal, rejecting the nightmare before her eyes, disheveling her hair like a small child, Emilia screamed as if in a frenzy.

――While, at the sleeping Rem’s bedside, Subaru’s corpse with a small knife pierced into his throat lay in front of the wailing Emilia.

      1. Why did I instinctively knew that on the first “liar” that was gonna be emilia, and what he’s gonna be seeing is the continuation of his failed loops. Though i thought the trial would start out with the scene of the previous loop’s continuation and not the very beginning of arc 4

        1. Oh MY GOD! I just found this save point. Try to check the Re:Zero Arc 3 Interlude III [To Each, Their Oaths](6/6)

“—When he arrived in the Capital, he found Rem after the attack, and when he knew all was lost, without a shred of hesitation, Subaru stabbed a dagger into his own throat.

What he felt at that moment, he could no longer remember. Everything had turned out so perfectly, so perfect beyond everyone’s expectations — But the truth is, throwing it all away in that instant, none of it mattered to him.

If he lost Rem, if it meant walking into a future without her, no matter how many times he must endure that pain, he will —— Only this, Subaru clearly remembers.

Penetrating his throat, in blood, pain, searing heat, and loss, he lost all consciousness.

When he woke, what he saw was Rem lying in a bed.

The save point had moved forward. The place of return had changed. Subaru saw hell, and only hell.”

          Subaru’s back to this Timeline I guess…

    1. (THIS IS MY GUESS!)

I believe what is happening is that we are being shown that Return By Death (RBD) isn’t the ability to REWIND time, but instead the ability to “jump” more or less to a NEW timeline. This would mean every death Subaru has suffered so far has never ended that timeline. This is supported by how in this chapter Subaru is being shown what occurred after his “death” in one of the previous loops. (Remember how Subaru killed himself when he found out about Rem’s condition?)

IF this is true, then this series just got a lot darker xD

      1. I’ve been thinking about that since the beginning of the series. I had hoped it wasn’t true… I still am, I’m hoping that this is just a vision of what doesn’t exist.. Because holy shit that would be suffering to the max.

      2. I suspected that was the case after seeing the anime. The intro shows a dosen Subaru walking in different directions and one Subaru reaches out and touches another’s shoulder cause that one to react as if they had an epiphany. It was odd they would show more than one Subaru and they pass knowledge over to each other as they go. So I amused myself with the idea that the other timelines would continue going.

Its also an old idea I’ve played with when watching time travel stories. There’s no reason to assume that the universe ends just because one travels back in time. Eg. As far as people know Dr. Brown got shot/ killed by terrorist and the Marty kid was vaporized when the reactor in the dr’s Car got hit by the chasing Terrorists.

Hmm and if we’re the first timeline to invent time travel we will never know as it would look just like a suicide machine.

        1. Isn’t that the reason why we will seek a device that would allow us to get ourselves ‘back’ on our own respective timelines/parallel universe? An example would be a machine shown in Steins;Gate, a device that shows numbers. We’ll manage to create it, you’ll see. We’re Selfish dominant parasites that’ll exploit every possibility, right!?

Going by that logic, we could assume other timelines(near our number) to have one as well and so on. This will prompt various laws regarding parallel universes/timelines.. This will literally establish not just the planet, galaxy we came from but also the timeline/parallel universe you came from(for passports >.< )

I will lol so hard if the time comes :') (nah, jokes on me cuz i'm already dead at that time…)

Just wanna point this out as well.. Multiverse theory is not infinite… Right this instant, no time-traveller patted your back, right? Did you float just now? Impossible right? So yeah, it's finite only.

          Like

          1. Unrelated to RE;Zero, but I need to clarify some things with you.

Multiverse theory does not include paradoxical situations.
Even excluding paradoxical situations, multiverse theory is still infinite.

            To explain infinity:
Infinite doesn’t mean ‘everything’, it just means that there is not limit to how many.
Eg. There is an infinite amount of numbers. If you exclude all decimals and count only whole numbers, this is still an infinite set. If you add in negative numbers, the infinite set becomes larger, and is still infinite.
If you created a set of all possible decimals between 0 and 1, this set is infinite, and it excludes all number >0 and <1

So its easy to have infinite universes excluding any paradoxical situations.

The idea you create is paradoxical, because it would imply that if every situation is possible, then all universes should encounter a traveler and all universes should not because all those travelers should have been told by another traveler to not travel to other universes.
Mostlikely the precision of universe hopping would be impacted by the uncountability of multiverses, because "every possibility at any point" sounds incredibly uncountable, which would imply you can;t sequence the universes, meaning you cant give them distinct labels, and you cant easily determine what universe you are in or what universe you are going to.

      3. ”Witness, a present that was not to be”
it’s not saying that it still exists, it’s what could have been or a kinda ”what if” I don’t think it’s multi-timeline based like Stein’s Gate, if that was true things will become more complicated later on, and, many of us wanted to know what others reactions to Subaru’s death would be, if the timeline continued, I know I wanted to know so this is great
and I think this is the second trial, but I’m not too sure about it tho
the 3 trials could be the past, present and future, and Subaru now is facing a ”present” that ”wasn’t to be”

        1. ”Witness, a present that was not to be”
Isn’t that part of the second trial and thus built from the witch of greed’s knowleadge of Subaru. Which in turn doesn’t make it fact but more an educated guess on her part.

Also from the perspective of a story this is a great chance to hint and explain this idea to us the readers so that we are ready to accepted when it comes into play later on in the story.

    2. Echindona said that anybody who takes the trials cant take the next one untill the ones inside finish it.
What i mean is. Subaru couldnt start the second trial with emilia still inside doing the first one, if she would win the trial both can enter at the same time the second trial. But since nobody is in the tomb anymore subaru accidently started the, second trial right away LOOOL. Gg now he can liberate the sanctuary without anybody noticing it untill its done.

        1. Emilia wouldn’t feel any rage if you ask me .
If anything she would feel sadness because she would be practically not needed , not even able to overcome her past that scars her and to top it all off she would think that she was directly responsible for having Subaru do this painful thing not once but 3 times .

          1. If you ask me, Emilia needs to man the fuck up. As a candidate for election she is rather pathetic. If she just lets Subaru take the trials, she will stay a good-for-nothing doll forever.
No wonder Subaru can’t feel any strength from her.

  4. oh shit…. Oh shit… OH SHIT

This is the nightmare that I’ve dreaded since the beginning of the series. What if, every time Subaru returns by death, he doesn’t go back in time, he just moves to another timeline, and the previous one kept going on without him.

    Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

This is going to be painful.

      1. So, having that in mind, i think we can agree that Dona has chosen the worst of all timelines abandoned by Subaru, as he didn’t die trying to protect/save someone, but by suicide after everything was already okay.
And from Emilia’s (or pretty much anyone’s) point of view, that suicide didn’t make any sense as no one can remember Rem so nobody knows how important she was for Subaru.

It seems like echidona might have started a second trial, one where he must confront his fear or doubts perhaps.

Subaru has been giving up his life a lot in this area, so showing him that would challenge him to overcome his despair.
Its pretty much his ultimate despair, knowing that rbd doesnt save anyone and his weakness to be unable to do something about it, not even death is granted for him because of the witch.

      1. The most important thing is, without an ‘observer’, someone who can see and comprehend the difference – all this if-worlds don’t matter a thing. Even if they exist, if you can’t observe them, it’s the same as if they never existed.

        1. Firstly we do not know if he is able to interact again with these worlds , or if he is able to ”observe them” . Not sure what you mean about observe since we can clearly see in this chapter that we can indeed watch what happens when Subaru leaves from the failed loop .

Secondly just because we can’t observe sth , but still know that it indeed exist there , doesn’t mean that it is the same as not existing .
There are many things that you can’t always check by yourself and observe with your own eyes like maybe wars in other countries , things that happened decades ago , and many more things , but you indeed know that happen doesn’t mean that they have no meaning .

          1. In case of quantum multiverse, all these uncountable verses cant interact with each other. Even if they do exist – it doesn’t matter. They do not mean anything.

Lets go for the most overused example of quantum uncertainty – the Cat. It’s both dead and alive until it’s observed. Thus the experiment requires an Observer – the one whose conscious observation will make the result Real – for that specific Observer.
There’s only one Subaru, the Observer. But all the countless verses have their own Subarus, which are not observers. Some of them are dead, some live their happy ever after with Rem in Kararagi. Some struggle through the Trials diverging slightly every moment. But do they matter? Only the Observer-Subaru makes the current world real.

When only one possibility was observed, others don’t matter. They are/were possible, they might exist somewhere, but they are not Real, they become one of countless possibilities.
What is a possibility of what might have happened, anything but an illusion, a thought?

          2. This goes to my first point saying that we still do not know if Subaru can interact again with these worlds . Probably not possible but we can’t know .
It is a fantasy world where the means to travel in other timelines isn’t ”technology” but literally magic . Who says that you can’t go back ? Also the fact that Echidna , and her books , can draw information and see things from other timelines even after Subaru leaves them and this implies that it can and will continue without him being there .

Also what makes a reality less real if Subaru dies in it ? It isn’t the one we care about but does this matter ?
We can also still observe it .
And just a thought . If the argument is that the reality that Subaru ends up in the end is the ”real” one just because he is the one that can travel between these realities you have to also think : is he the only one able ?
Satella gave him this power . She might as well be able to usu it herself . This is ofc a theory , but if it is true then in the other realities Satella still exists . Doesn’t this make the other realities as real as the one Subaru is right now ?

( ps : I had a theory that it isn’t that Satella can’t die but that she does have RNB and every time they manage to finish her off somehow she finds the way to prevent it from happening )

            I think you misunderstood.
            >the reality that Subaru ends up in the end is the ”real” one just because he is the one that can travel between these realities
The current world is the Real one because HE experiences, observes it, lives in it. It is real for him, and for us, as we see the world through his eyes.

            >We can also still observe it .
No, we can’t. What Subaru saw just now is just a ghost of the world he left behind. The Realistic illusion. What can he do while watching it in ghost-mode? What will he change, that he didn’t change yet? Subaru of the Real world didn’t commit a suicide, and never died.

            >Doesn’t this make the other realities as real as the one Subaru is right now?
It doesn’t. For Subaru, that is. People can observe (live) one world at a time, it will be real for them.
Subaru’s experience and memory lets him see the difference after each reset, thus perceiving each world as a different one, and changing it further. He’s literally forging his own version of reality.

There’s another reason for not caring. Imagine the amount of diverged worlds. There won’t be enough space on the planet to write down this number. Why should you care for two or three of them, while ignoring all the others you didn’t even see? Even God wouldn’t bother. Why should Subaru, or we, care?

The last paragraph you said about why care he should care for the 3 out of infinite realities have a point . The only answer I could give is that he is responsible for those few realities and he lived in them .
But this doesn’t mean that much and it isn’t unreasonable to not care much for them , if you are a hardcore rationalist and have the mental strength to do so ( which is really hard ) .

            For the other point .
Just because it is the reality that Subaru ended up in doesn’t make it more real than the rest ,even if he is the protagonist . It doesn’t give any more value to it and doesn’t diminish the deaths he caused ( or most of the the time didn’t prevent ) in the other worlds .
And in the end Subaru can’t just calm himself by just saying all the others are fake because ”I am the protagonist” .

Also we don’t know if he will be able to interact or not with these realities again in the future . Possibly not but since magic exist everything could be possible . But we do know that these realities will continue to exist even if Subaru isn’t there to see them first hand .

Hmm, I think I understand what you are saying, if we look at the emotional side of things.
Taking responsibility… But most of his deaths Subaru couldn’t help it – he didn’t have the strength to protect himself, or the knowledge to outmaneuver his enemies. Being responsible for all that – isn’t it some sort of egoism? The alternative was to run away, but he lost it half-way, thanks to Rem.

I prefer to think, that by struggling to create a better future for his friends and loved ones, Subaru will make much, much more worlds where everyone is happy. In the end, there sheer number will outweigh all the sadness he left behind in the failed worlds.

            Like

          6. @B-kun
”he will create much more worlds were everyone is happy…”
Wouldn’t he just create only one world were everyone is happy ? Since in every other case he would have failed to saved some people and on the very least he would have died ( making man people sad in the process ) .
So it is more like he is sacrificing every other reality he is in to make one reality one of the best cases possible .

Also what if there is one reality and every other reality after that is created by the power Subaru was given so that he will change the outcome ( meaning there are not infinite possible outcomes but just one main one and all the other ones Subaru creates with the aid of his powers ) .
The theory about the infinite realities can be wrong , and even Subaru can’t be sure there are infinite versions , making the previous loops count or more .
( this goes bad to the comment why he should care for 2-3 realities out of infinite )

He will be made to relive his sins. He can’t avoid the responsibility of his past lives. That, or Echidna is playing with him.

Either way, unexpected developments are necessary in a “game” after all.

Anyhow I decided to drop the bomb because I saw those named comment talking about spoiler.

  29. Well it’s technically what’s supposed to happen: whenever you “rewind” or go back in time amd change stuff, an alternate reality is created. There’s theoretically an alternate reality for every decision or outcome.

You could leave the toilet seat up in this world, but somewhere out there there’s a “you” that didn’t leave it up. There’s also probably a “you” that decided to wait a while longer.

    “do, and” – extra comma
“But only went” – should be “It”
“His ear were” – “ear” should be plural
“suffering in” – “suffering possible in” or suffering imaginable in”?
“with a small knife pierced into his throat” – surround the whole phrase with commas

Wow, that end is interesting. Makes me wonder if Tappei will right continuations of the world after some of Subaru’s deaths if he hasn’t already

  33. I think that it’s the 2nd trial. He has to face his present and the fact that how everyone around is feeling when he values his life so Little when compared to everything else

Also it’s my theory that return by death does switch back time….as roswaal himself said in the chapter “warlock” that the ability to rewind time is pinnacle of dark magic and that even beako can only just halt it

Hell, I thought Subaru was being metaphorical when he spoke of killing himself.

And cast aside any beliefs that Emilia healed him from that suicide. I doubt their relationship would be stable of she saw that at the time.

  36. Question: it wasn’t said before that one cannot take two trials same night or something?
Another question: didn’t he forget about who was in the trial and tea party (Echidna) one or several times when going back to the point in time when he just finished first trial?

    1. 1. If there are two participants with different progress, the furthest participant’s trial will not occured until the other reached the same progress. And if there is only one participant, he can enter the next trial within the same night by just reentering the tomb again from the outside.

      2. I forget if it was before or after the 2nd tea party, but subaru somehow remembered his encounter with echidona and that resulted in the broke of his contract restriction, making him keep remembering it no matter how many times he dies afterwards.
