[Echidona: I don’t remember specifying a location…… but I was the one who received her promise to guard the Forbidden Library and to wait for someone to come]

[Subaru: Then… who is “That Person”? What’ll I have to do to free her?]

Through four hundred years of solitude, Beatrice had been waiting for “Someone”.
Yet not even Beatrice herself knew who that “Someone” was. Nor did Subaru have the slightest clue.
But if he asked Echidona herself, the one who had arranged this promise in the first place――

[Echidona: Now who would it be, I wonder?]

[Subaru ――H, uh?]

[Echidona: No no, I wasn’t joking, I really am wondering. Who do you think Beatrice’s awaited “Person” would be?]

Echidona asked, as if she had been presented with a question she did not know the answer to. Stunned by this reply, Subaru shook his head,

[Subaru: Even you… don’t know who Beatrice is waiting for?]

[Echidona: No, I don’t. I have no idea who Beatrice’s awaited “Person” would be]

[Subaru: But… how? Weren’t you the one who told her to wait in the Forbidden Library? If you don’t know, then…… unless…]

The one who instructed Beatrice to wait in the Forbidden Library was Echidona, but it could’ve been someone else who set the condition for her to wait for “That Person” to come.
If so, then the one who would know the answer would again be someone else――

[Echidona: No, you’re mistaken]

[Subaru: ――――]

[Echidona: I was the one who instructed Beatrice to wait for “That Person”. You weren’t wrong about that. What you got wrong was something more fundamental]

[Subaru: Funda..mental?]

[Echidona: Just why in the world did I seal this contract with Beatrice? That is where you are misunderstanding. I made Beatrice guard the Forbidden Library so that she could give its contents to “That Person”, is that what you thought?]

He couldn’t understand what Echidona was saying.
It was just a natural assumption. When instructing someone to give something to someone else, naturally, the intention was for that thing to end up in the right person’s hands.

But, in front of Subaru’s instinctive interpretation, Echidona shook her head, and said,

[Echidona: That wasn’t the point of my instruction to Beatrice. I sealed the contract with her, having her wait for “That Person”…… but I was also waiting to see who she would choose “That Person” to be]

[Subaru: ――――]

――――

――――――

――――――――――――

――――――――――――――――――――what?

[Echidona: You see, that child was created for a specific purpose. But necessity arose for her to live in a way that differed from her original purpose…… for that, she had to go far away from here, and there, she needed to be given a new purpose. For that child, who now had nothing, it was necessary to give her a reason to live. It was for that, that I sealed this contract with her]

[Subaru: ――Tha..t’s]

[Echidona: Watching over the Forbidden Library, and eventually handing it over in its entirety to “That Person” who was destined to come. I placed no limitations, since, in the first place, there is no correct answer. She stays alive just as planned, and I have another result to look forward to. It’s quite logical, don’t you think?]

[Subaru: ――――]

[Echidona: Of course, going four hundred years without choosing anyone is a result in itself. So was the fact that she did not simply choose one of the people she had met in her days to be “That Person”. And potentially, her deliberations over whether to break the contract, desiring for her own death, is also a result in itself]

[Subaru: And how… do you feel about that?]

[Echidona: ――? It’s quite marvellous, I think?]

As if she had just been asked something incredibly obvious, Echidona innocently tilted her head.
That reply, that attitude, and the expression of the girl he saw in his mind, all led him to the answer.

It’s decided. Understood. Clearly understood.
――His misconception about who this person was that he was dealing with, has been rectified.

[Subaru: Echidona…… you really, are a Witch]

[Echidona: ――――]

[Subaru: An inexplicable, unfathomable, monster]

[Echidona: ――――]

He told her. The answer that was in his heart.
He withdrew the hand he had almost given her, and as for who it would now reach out to, he has already decided.

[Subaru: I…… I can’t take your hand. I’ve already decided whose hand I’ll be taking]

[Echidona: ――――]

[Subaru: With those callous, binding words, without the slightest malice, you stole four hundred years from that girl. ――I’ve already decided. I’ll be taking that girl’s hand. Not yours]

That was their farewell.
With it, he shook away the hand of the one he once thought would walk alongside him.

He lifted his face. And looked forward.
Beneath his eyelids, he saw that girl’s final expression.

――Disappearing, dying, afraid, twisted as if about to cry, but nonetheless relieved that she had protected Subaru.

He would take the hand of the girl who mourned his “Death”, that much was decided.

[Echidona: ――――]

Echidona’s eyes narrowed.
Flickers of thought flashed through her irises as if pondering on what words to say to Subaru.

Yet before she could, the change had arrived.

[Minerva: ――――she’s here]

[Camilla: Oh, no, I…… I don’t want, anything, to do with…… this, anymore]

[Sekhmet: At a troublesome time, a troublesome person, has come to cause more trouble, haa…]

The three onlooking Witches all gave their respective reactions.
He felt an overwhelming pressure on his back.
While in front, staring at what was behind him, Echidona’s eyes slightly widened. Following her astonished gaze, Subaru turned around, and saw it――

[???: ――――]

――With everything above her neck shrouded in pitch darkness, there stood the Witch of Envy.

Oooooh Satella vs Echidona!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

This part was so sad for Beatrice… she only waited this long because she stayed faithful to the contract.

That ending with the shroud just above her shoulders makes me imagine that it’s an awful censoring job by some news cast to keep anonymity

    1. I kind of feel bad for Satella she’s just misunderstood, sure she destroyed half the world, but maybe she will have a good excuse for doing that like maybe it was for Subaru. To be honest I think Subaru and Satella are alike in some ways like their devotion to people they don’t know fully. Well, I guess in Subaru’s case he did get to know them quite a few times, but no normal person would be that devoted, maybe that’s why people call him Pride through he doesn’t really match being prideful over his qualities and achievements that much…

        1. I wasn’t being serious I was just saying if she did it for Subaru would it really be ok I know that destroying the world for someone is not a good reason at all, although I was being serious about hoping she did have a half decent reason instead of doing everything for Subaru because she is a mysterious character. cx

      1. History’s a bit of a mess on Laguna. Memories of the World get messed with, so “when” certain events actually happen is questionable. Look forward to future chapters in which Emilia’s past is learned of, and consider Satella in terms of parallelism. Swallowing half the world in shadow could take on a new interpretation when Emilia’s past is considered.

        As could Beatrice’s original purpose.

    1. And yet again I have another theory.

Subaru forgot to pay for his childcare.
      Any objections?

      On a serious note:
      SatellaXSubaru?
      More like Satella=Subaru.

      1. I have a feeling that Satella’s true identity is actually Emilia in the future who turns back time too much in some accident and becomes crazy waiting for Subaru to appear from the dimensional crack.
I also strongly believe that in the End, Subaru will have to redo everything up until he came in this world without Return By Death. From zero.

        Liked by 2 people

          1. I collected various theories about satella’s relationship with subaru.

Think of it this way: Subaru had RBD few times, he told emilia that she was his savior when he was ganged up by three alley stooges, but the current loop emilia doesn’t know any of such things.

What if the same applied before subaru got his power? Subaru got his power from satella. Meaning that satella as the original owner of RBD, saved and charmed by subaru, learnt and tought many things from subaru. Then subaru died, leading satella to promised to redo things to save and protect subaru from dying. Just like the first episode of the anime when emilia first died.

This is enough material for your fan fiction, isn’t it?

            Liked by 2 people

          2. It is good theory. Satella giving Subaru RBD.
            I’m certain it’s not a quincidence.
I’m attempting to decode how the series might end. And arc 4 is packed with foreshadowing.
            Remember Subaru’s unimpressive uncle?

    2. Satella couldn’t vent her punishment in the real world because subaru is alone taking the trial. And this time it is the “sane” satella, not the envy personality.

        1. Satella was a half elf girl. The how-she-became-a-witch is still not told by the author. You know petelgeuse right? Before he got the witch gene and turned into sin archbishop, he was a normal human with kind heart. He then became the crazy man u saw in the anime after absorbing the witch gene. At least crazy petelgeuse still able to communicate with other people, unlike envy.

  2. TBH, I was kinda expecting this to be Beatrice’s contract all along. It wasn’t surprising. From the moment she (Beatrice) admitted to not knowing who “that person” was, there really couldn’t be any other interpretation, since Beatrice by herself would never be able to determine “that person” identity, it could only be whoever Beatrice herself decided it to be.

    1. No because her contract implied no such thing and they usually very specific. It’s not Betty fault she told her a lie which she ahd been faithfully executing. Echidna is logic is horrible twisted especially becasue she too in the account that Betty would be driven to suicide from agonzing all over it.

      1. Basically this is exactly why Subaru should not contract with her. He could end up like that worse for her own greed. Echidna has even tacitly admitted it.

  8. Monster is not a word a lady should be called. Call her bad, twisted, crazy or evil (they might actually like it) but not a monster.

    1. Echidna is. A unimaginable monster. One of the worst existence of all.

And Subaru’s “greed” is more like “I’ll save the most people possible”. Pride is “I”ll say I’ll save someone, and I’ll actually do it. Disregard everything else, and force my perfect future on everyone. I am the only one who can do it.”.

  9. Not taking Echidona is just retarded. A dude’s gotta read between the lines with more complex people.

As for Beatrice… Those high standards – finding no one worthy in 400 years.

    1. I mean, he is not forced to use Echidona help all the time, and he may put the condition that she could never lie to him, so refusing is really stupid.

      1. He doesn’t necessarily need Echidna’s help to get it of this situation and if he can’t trust her it’s beter not sign something he can’t get out of.

        Liked by 1 person

    2. And Echidna isn’t complex, she just greedy lol. There is nothing to read inbetween about she said. Betty’s situation shows that taking a her help is double edge just as Witches were warning him. If she willing to leave what essentially her child to suffer like that partially satiate her curiosity what do think it happen to an even bigger guinea pig like him? Is Subaru’s life that cheap to be used like this till he breaks and everyone else suffers for it? She did not have do what she did to Betty if wanted her to live and there is rub in all of it.

He can still contract with and go for if he wants despite the risks and after what he’s seen but he nobody to blame but himself for things not turning out the way he wanted.

Echidna doesn’t have to lie to to deceive you becasue she is great at word games and omitting crucial information.

You guys are waifuing her way too hard, if you think someone wouldn’t have second thoughts after hearing all that.

      1. Bobby, the point is exactly that all my forgiveness points have already been spent on Rem, so no one else gets them. Rem is far more likeable as a character than Beatrice; tsunderes have always been annoying to me, and a selfish, bratty loli tsundere is that much worse. Besides, Rem has more than redeemed herself – it could be seen as a karmic cycle that she first brutally murdered Subaru, then was brutally, gruesomely murdered herself. Rem had her hand in saving the village children and defeating the White Whale. Beatrice only cares about her loneliness ending. That is selfishness in the extreme, and in my opinion Subaru is way too kind to just forgive that, because they were not just ANY people – we are talking about Rem here, one of Subaru’s loves, and Petra, an innocent child. The police and army argument in no way holds up – there is no way to save -everyone- in the world, but one should definitely do all one can, especially starting out with those closest to you, and also, being in the police or army is not the only way to help people. “It has nothing to do with me” definitely shouldn’t be an acceptable mindset. If she “cares” so much about Subaru, should she not want to save those closest to him? No, it’s only “Don’t leave ME alone, set ME above anyone in importance”. Despicable and unforgivable.

        Like

        1. Yet you forgive Rem murdering and torturing Subaru to death? If doing nothing is grave because it doesn’t help Subaru help/save someone, then how is outright killing him any better? It is like what Beako did but up to eleven. How do you forgive Rem for this? How could she be redeemed for a sin this grave? Beako never tried to harm Subaru even feeling all the miasma oozing out of him.

          Like

          1. It’s not about Beatrice never hurting Subaru. Everything she’s ever done “for” Subaru has been with her own selfish motives in mind. Killing Subaru so brutally as she did was certainly completely wrong of Rem, but it was rooted in a misunderstanding based on the fact that Subaru had not been able to gain a trust strong enough to override the stench, and thus was considered a Witch Cultist. The Witch Cultists are evil, Rem did it to protect those in the mansion, and pretty much the whole surrounding area. If you’re asking why I forgave her, it’s because in every incarnation after, we’ve seen that it’s not about Rem being a heartless killing machine, but rather, she is incredibly selfless. She doesn’t protect only Subaru because she loves him (if she did things only for HIM, like Beatrice does, that would also be selfish, since that’s only a desire to keep the person you love safe so she’d be happy). But instead, Rem also protected the village children, and helped rid the whole country of the Whale. Beatrice has never done a single thing out of real selflessness, it’s only been to avoid or end her own suffering (“die elsewhere so I don’t have to see you / “thank me for what I did for you” / “asking me to kill you is too cruel” / “I didn’t kill you because I didn’t want to be alone!” / “put me above all others”). Me me me. Beatrice has no real empathy for anyone. Hyperfixation on one person while heartlessly abandoning everyone else is not normal, and not a sign of true empathy or a good heart. Rem puts others before herself. The proof is in the pudding and Rem has redeemed herself from her wrongdoing. Character goodness isn’t determined by what you do to / for only one person. It’s the sum of one’s actions.

Based on this chapter, I think Echidona doesn’t understand how to deal with emotions, or if she really does have genuine emotions of her own.. 😦
Even after it was revealed that she did so many cruel things and not even caring about the people who were affected by her work, I just can’t find it in myself to hate her..

strider got a point tho. maybe echidona doesn’t know how to deal with emotions. well sure she had those facial expressions from time time, but it was nothing more of a script than an emotion itself. beatrice, in a sense, maybe doesn’t know how to handle her emotions well also. the only difference between them is what made them like that. echidona has swallowed more than enough knowledge. so much that she may have already thought that emotions are just hindrances for her bottomless greed for knowledge. while beatrice had been alone for 400 years. sure there are people who come and go, but surely, anyone that would have the privilege to live for 400 years alone may have been already tired that they wouldn’t be able to differentiate their emotions bc all they understand is that they were alone.

  18. Aww, dang! And I was so looking forward to Dona-chan sticking around with Subaru for the rest of the story. Hope I’m not the only one feeling bad for her? She gave such an awesome speech it gave me goosebumps and just ‘look’ at her face now; the poor witch is about to burst out crying.

Well, at least Miss World Eater didn’t get an excuse to go all Silent Hill on everyone’s asses… ‘least I think so.

  19. Nonono! I am not ready for Echidona to go away… as well as the other Witches! It is true, they are Witches and they can’t be treated as normal people, but I think even Subaru is hurt, having realized it… This is so damn sad.
However I am on Subaru’s side in choosing Beatrice. Her sentiments are true and she can be saved… Subaru is the only one who can do this.
And then an unexpected Satella. The hell?
Thanks for the chapter!! It was amazing!
