Listening to Sekhmet calling him a child, Subaru, closed off in his shell, couldn’t help but think that maybe she was right.
Obstinate and conceited, he was stubbornly shutting out the voices around him―― but surely, his way would be the most reliable for minimizing losses.
Being granted an unlimited number of chances to rewind the world, with his life as the only price, Subaru could keep trying indefinitely. In the process, over and over, Subaru’s heart would steadily be abraded away.
But just when he was on the brink of shattering, he was given the words to make him stand again.

After his soul is finally worn to the core, if he could just hear those words with everyone there beside him―― he would be satisfied.

Suddenly, a child’s voice pierced through the silence of the scene as the Witches held their breaths.
Curled into a ball, Subaru felt his head being caressed by a little palm. Glancing up through his teary vision, he saw the murky shape of a tan-skinned girl.
Subaru’s gaze had landed on the “Witch of Pride”.

[Typhon: Poor Baru… he’s cry~ing. ……Who made him cry~?]

The kneeling Typhon stood up, glowering at the other wordless Witches.
A perilous gleam twirled in her eyes as she looked at each of the Witches in turn, then she raised her brows when she finally spotted Satella.

[Typhon: Tella? Tella’s here? Why? It’s been so long~]

Typhon waved as she called to Satella, but the war-like gleam in her eyes hadn’t diminished. Seeing this, the first to address her was Sekhmet, who spilled a languid sigh as she sat up.

[Sekhmet: Typhon……haa… He’s a bit occupied at the moment, huu… Don’t bother the boy, haa. Come here… huu…]

[Typhon: Mama… did you do something bad to Baru? Mama… are you a sinner too~?]

[Sekhmet: Your mother… haa… doesn’t have the energy to be a bad person, huu… I wouldn’t want to give myself more work, and I wouldn’t want to give you more work either, haa]

Typhon gave a little nod at Sekhmet’s answer, but showed no intention of moving away from Subaru like she was told. Instead, she turned to Minerva,

Echidona shrugged, teasing Minerva for her unconvincing reply. Minerva shot her a sharp glare, while Typhon also followed her gaze, turning to Echidona as her childish face twisted into a frown.

[Typhon: So it’s Dona. Dona, you did something bad again, didn’t you~? Dona… are you a sinner~?]

[Echidona: Now why did that sound like a conclusion rather than a question when you’re asking me? I think I should have a word with the one who raised you about that. So, what do you have to say?]

[Sekhmet: It’s to do with your daily behavior… haa…]

Saying this, Sekhmet languorously held her hand to her forehead. Without leaving Subaru’s side, Typhon was still intently searching for the “Sinner who made Subaru cry”.
Seeing the small Witch like this, Echidona narrowed her eyes, muttering [Anyway…],

[Echidona: Now that Typhon’s here, we almost have everyone. If Daphne shows up as well, it’ll be just like 400 years ago……]

[????: Did.. someone just call for Daphne…?]

In response to Echidona’s remark, a pitch-black coffin abruptly appeared on the meadow.
Inside, with her entire body in bondage and her eyes covered by blindfolds, was the Witch of Gluttony, Daphne.
She made a little twitch with her nose, as if sniffing out all the people present.

[Daphne: Not just Subaruun… Tella-Tella’s here too? Woaaaw… All seven Witches of Sin are here, even the Sage-candidate too……]

[Echidona: Daphne. ――He’s… not there yet]

[Daphne: ……Aaah~, really? Sorry… Anyway…… sniff~ sniff~~ I smell something salty… is someone crying? Is it Neru-Neru?]

Without the slightest regard for the mood, Daphne went on poking at the tense situation in her dopey tone.
To have all seven Witches, including Satella, gathered in the Dream Citadel must’ve been a rare sight even during the golden age of Witches 400 years ago.
With the seven Witches who by themselves had once plunged the world into chaos―― assembled now, in this scene set to explode, was enough power to reshape the world.

The Witch of Pride, seeking to pass judgment upon the one who made the young boy cry.
The Witch of Wrath, clenching her fists, aiming to fulfill the wish of the close friend at her side.
The Witch of Sloth, watching everyone’s every move, ready to crush any who would break the peace.
The Witch of Lust, keeping her uninvolved demeanor, preparing to protect herself should the situation set off.
The Witch of Gluttony, having already lost interest in what was happening around her, now agonizing over whose fingers to munch on to stave off her hunger.
The Witch of Greed, directing her hostility toward one particular Witch, while her eyes went on brimming with curiosity at just how this tea party shall unfold.

And, the one who was not the Witch of Envy, but Satella――

[Satella: I, love you. ――Because you gave me light. It was you who took me by the hand, and showed me the world outside. In the nights when I was lonely and afraid, you held my hand. And when I was all alone, you kissed me on the lips and told me that I wasn’t. You’ve given me so, so much. ……That’s why, I love you. Because you… you gave me everything]

[Subaru: ――――]

Subaru couldn’t recall doing a single thing that Satella had whispered.
He had no part in it, it had nothing to do with him. Whether it was meeting Satella, trading words with her, or sharing a single feeling of warmth. Everything she said had been the product of her delusions. The arrayed, empty fantasies of a woman crazed with longing.
That was how it should be. And yet, “Natsuki Subaru” remembered.

[Subaru: Why is this…… inside me, what is this? I don’t want this feeling. Don’t try to bind me… with memories that can’t exist…… you… you… I…… tk]

“I hate you”, was all he needed to say.
All he had to do was stab the girl who offered him these feelings with the fact that he didn’t have the slightest affection for her. Once he does, he would be able to see the look on the face of the one who had selfishly sought to warp his heart. Surely, it would be an expression magnificently twisted by heartbreak.

――”But, how could you do that to her?”

[Typhon: Baru?]

[Sekhmet: Oh, kid……]

[Camilla: H-he’s……]

[Minerva: You…… tch]

[Daphne: Subaruun?]

[Echidona: ――Ah, well that’s one option… Natsuki Subaru]

As the Witches called to Subaru in turn, Echidona gave a small nod at this outcome.

Cornered by the Witches, he didn’t know what was anything anymore.
With his heart on the brink of twisting, what was left for him to do when even his will was no longer his own?

But, in front of Satella, when even his rejection was being turned into acceptance―― that was truly terrifying.

        2. Actually that makes perfect sense. What she describes is what HAS happened to her AND subaru. Its the same situation with Subaru and Emilia. Subaru said, that emilia saved him and gsve him much but she refuses those events because they never have happened before due a, different timeline. It disturbs and baffles me, how Subaru is unable to see this despite showing off he is gonna go with all information he can. Anyway, apperently Satella had something with subaru and rewinded somehow/whyever time, and Subaru KNOWS. HE knows that thats true, otherwise his feelings for her would be hatered but he cant bring himself to hate her because in one sentence it said WHATS THIS SO FAMILIAR FEELING? GG WP SATELLA BEST GRILL.

          1. I don’t think that’s entirely correct. I do believe that Satella might Emilia from the future or a different universe, or maybe the future of a different universe, but feelings can’t transfer back through time. Subaru doesn’t have any feelings for Satella, except maybe hatred. Satella is literally twisting his emotions right now.

        3. really just repeating the same theories pl had almost from the get go of re zero. possible the witches couldn’t find a sage candidate in their world so they dragged sub into theirs. if rbd has no time limit then its possible for this to be the second time sub has ‘come’ to this world. blocking/erasing his memories so he will fall in love with emelia not just focus on satella.

          1. This sounds like a more logical theory compared to others. The way Satella is speaking shows too much information & familiarity for her to simply make it all up. Also one of the witches, I think maybe Minerva mentioned this a chapter or two ago but she said “I can’t for the life of me understand how roundabout Satella is. Which implies she atleast knows more than she’s leading on. And in the very first episode of Re:Zero it showed him rewinding time holding Emilia’s hand when they were both slaughtered by Elsa. So who knows how many times he could have returned by death or what could have transpired. Idk just brain storming. At the moment lots of theories are plausible.

          2. Why would they not know lol? It’s only Subaru who doesn’t want to look at her face so it’s only Subaru who sees the shadow that hides her upper body. Or, are you assuming she is using Lust to look like Emillia to Subaru? The problem with this argument is that people know that Satella is a half elf from 400 years ago, and that Emillia is her spiting image (hence the abuse she receives all the time). Why would the witch want to appear as Emillia to everyone she appears to even when she wasn’t even born yet? I can understand choosing this appearance in terms of her relation with Subaru, but if it was true, she would do it to Subaru alone. Not the witches, not the cultists, not the random citizens from hundreds of years. It doesn’t make sense and she gains nothing from this.

          1. Satella being Emillia as a (forced) vessel is very possible, yes. But the original witch, from which the genes of Envy come from, however, I doubt it.

            The problem here is to know whether it was the vessel 400 years ago through some time travel shenanigans.

    The witches gathering started, and that monster once again showed just how adorable she is. Since she’s deeply in love with Subaru, i think we can consider her as one of best girl. In relative terms, of course. Since there’s no perfect waifu in this series.
    At least, she does what best girl should do. When he shows you his pathetic side, dont get mad and leave him. Best girl cant get mad at his bae.
    And Subaru tried to suicide there is kinda cool to me.

If you jump into a lion’s mouth and the girl tell you it’s the best thing to do, and you think it is preferable for her to tell you so, it means you have a grave problem.

            You seem to be referring to the moment when Emillia “cut ties” with Subaru, using such a twisted argument to insult her when what she did was perfectly fine, in fact, it was the thing to do in her situation. And Rem would have probably done the same too, btw. To say that “best girl” stays always like a little doggy at your side no matter what you do (harm yourself “for” her with no regard to your own life or something) is the most stupid thing you could ever say.

  6. I don’t think Satella is Emilia, there’s enough reasons to believe it’s not just from the sense of her words on this chapter. I think Subaru may have been in the alternate world for way longer than he thinks he is, and lost his memories about it. Flugel may just as well be another earthling, while not Subaru as well.

      1. I very highly doubt that Subaru is Flugel. It is, however, very possible that Flugel is Subaru (see the order, it is important). People believe that Subaru is some kind of reincarnation but it sounds like bullshit to me.

          1. Flugel is mentionned as soon as arc 3 (Flugel’s tree). He is also the “sage” Beatrice mentions in arc 2 (the sage, the dragon, the sword saint story about the WoE). We just don’t know much about him because he seems to have been secretive. He is talked about more later on, in arc 6.

        1. Yeah and Emillia’s father is a elf (full elf too) so Satella being her mother is not possible no matter what. When Echidna and P* talks about a witch being Emillia’s mother, they are certainly talking about someone else.

          Either that, or Emillia is a clone of Satella. Or some kind of homunculus. But it would contradict the facts we know about her family, which seems to be a very established fact.

  10. So after all, Satella isn’t actually so bad as we thought. In fact, she helped Subaru even much better than Rem and Emilia. Just imagine a Subaru in a new world without RBD. The novel would have ended in the old loot house.

    1. I got this to work by moving one of the notification mails from my ‘social’ to my ‘primary’ box. I think you can just click and drag the mail to move them on pc. On Gmail’s mobile app I had to press and hold the mail, then press the ‘more options’ button (three dots) and then press ‘move to…’.

  16. It seems to me that SAGE is the male version of WITCH. He has the witch gene now, so I think that is the reason why he is a candidate now (just guessing). Can somebody remind me of the sages mentioned so far? Was Fluegel a Sage? I think Roswaal did not consider him a Sage.

    1. Do we have any confirmation that the Witches have anything to do with the cult?
      They seem more like whackjobs who somehow got Witch genes and the Authorities after the Witches died. I’m not sure they choose Archbishops, or are even aware of them. The cult might not have even been founded until after they all died, so even if Subaru was the Archbishop of Pride, Typhon might not know. Though I don’t think he is. Beteleguese only wondered that because normally no one but an Archbishop would have that much Witch scent on them and the Archbishops besides Pride are all known. Subaru is just a special case. If anything, he would be the Archbishop of Envy, but the cult doesn’t seem to recognize such a rank

    2. No one said Subaru was the arcbishop of Pride (not apostle) besides Betelgeuse speculations. Just that what he has is most definitely the genes of Pride, and thus its authority. Well, yes, that would make Subaru the Arcbishop of Pride or… a warlorck? of Pride by default. But you have to differentiate between having the genes, and actually having a seat in the cult and doing things. Subaru is most definitely “Pride” in its essence, but he sure isn’t a cultist, a Arcbishop even less.

      That is, of course, assuming that “Shinimodori” is actually the authority of Pride given “form” by Subaru’s desire to reach the best future, reviving, reverting time, and solving any kind of situation.

      People assume that the witch is controlling RbD for Subaru, “managing it” for him. But it could also be that his “shinimodori” is nothing more than the WoE’s doing through mere shadow control or something along those lines. That they have some kind of contract Subaru isn’t aware of, becuause he has a part of his memory/mind sealed.

      It could also be that the time reversal is not done by the witch. Maybe it is done by Subaru himself. Maybe he has a contract with someone/something else. Maybe it is a certain vilain that will appear later this arc. Maybe it is the dragon? Maybe it is Flugel? We really don’t know to be honest.

Not just Return by Death (the Pride of being able to get through any obstacle, no matter how insurmountable it may seem), but also Guarded Memory (the Pride of wisdom gained, knowlege gained, which perfectly fits a Sage). The way Guarded Memory would work is that Subaru is unaffected by alterations to Memories of the World. So when a Name is removed from Memories of the World, Subaru’s personal memory is unaffected. This doesn’t protect him from other powers that directly affect his memory.

      1. Well Typhon is a child with too much power, judgeing people with the mind of a child. I wouldn’t hold it against her. It’s different from, say, Echidna who is an adult, who is very, extremely knowledgeable, and “knows” what she is doing.

        Lastly, they are still witches though. They have their own blue and orange morality. They are actually pretty close to Subaru on that point.

    1. i have a theory that subaru is flugel and emilia is satella and witch of envy is originally her mother. and the one who responsible for the dead of the witches is flugel because the witches are making chaos at that time and he as a sage had to put the order back and also the one who made the cult by sealing the witch gene and overtime the gene somehow ended to the hands of people like betelgeuse . and i think satella somehow ended killing her mother and received her gene and satella help flugel to kill all of other witches. and her father is puck . and maybe the reason of why satella ended destroying half of the world and also the witches because she need the power to kill p*****a but failed and the witch of envy gradually consuming her soul. in the end flugel seal part of her soul or memory or whatever which is satella’s part and the witch of envy part sealed at somewhere else and the body of satella which cannot be destroyed reborn as emilia . i also think that flugel are the one who knows about the existence of other world and making plan to save emilia in the future because he have limited time he make pacts and sacrificed himself and reborn at the other world as subaru at the cost of all his power and memories

      1. The problem with what you are stating is that both Satella and Emillia are half elf. So Satella cannot be Emillia’s mother. Not only is there a gigantic time discrepancy, but that would mean Emillia or Satella cannot be half elf.

        Emillia’s father is full elf, so her mother has to be a human/witch. Flugel reincarnating as Subaru is nonsense.

        Emillia could only be either becoming Satella in the future and then travel back in time OR she is a clone in the same vein as the Lewes. This is the only, and closest possible links she’d have IF they are really related to one another. Nothing else makes sense. Satella sure isn’t Emillia’s mother.

        And don’t mention P’s name, she hasn’t appeared yet so it’s a spoiler.

        1. no what i think is witch of envy (a human) originally is satella’s mother and his father is puck which is elf thus make satella a half elf and something happening which make her inherited her gene from her mother thus make her being witch of envy (possibly killed her mother) i dont think that satella is emilia’s mother. emilia is the body of satella that lost her gene , memory and maybe part of her soul by flugel. flugel wishes to save satella and maybe he discarded his power so he can save emilia/satella somehow by reborn in our world as subaru then getting back again to the other world

  23. So, the witch genes of envy where forced onto a woman called satella. Because it was “forced” on her she was able to keep her mind (so you have 1 body, 2 personalities?).
    Satella and Emilia are the abviously strongly linked to each other. Maybe Subaru is the reincarnarion of the guy who loved Satella and Emilia the reincarnation of Satella (recall the strange behaviour of Emilia when she acted like everything was ok when actually Subaru was about to die and was coughing up blood).
    So Satella found Subaru, summoned him to the other world and confirmed that he was the one when Subaru was determined to save Emilia.

    Well this is my idea, i don’t see in what other way Satella might be affected to Subaru.

    Maybe Emilia is Satella and what she said where future events. But that doesn’t explain why Subaru was chosen in the very beginning.

    Mmm… can’t say I love time paradoxes or secret past of a character to explain everything. Hope there’s a better explanation.

  45. Has anyone yet presented the theory that Satella’s from the future, but rather an Emilia who possesses Return by Death? That she might be the original character to be afflicted with RBD and the ensuing, unending nightmare of trial and error?

    She’s talking the way Subaru tends to when he’s musing over RBD, and from what I gather she (or Envy) is the witch responsible for the Authority that grants RBD. She’s also either possessed by Envy, or a split-personality character with Envy as the other half. Subaru’s well on the way to his own mire of insanity – and with Echidona interfering with his progression through RBD, would Satella not want to intervene to ensure he doesn’t break and die?

    One of the bigger points of curiosity for me at this junction is whether Subaru’s going to have his tongue in future loops or not.

And used reincarnation magic to reincarnate Subaru to the other world (our world) and when the time was right, pulled him back into the fantasy world again, because she just wants to see him again face-to-face, embrace him and love him once again.

    Satella feels like having all of Emilia’s memories in every loop and even more, so there are 2 ways this is possible imo: Satella is a future Emilia who was helped many times by Subaru (but that can’t explain why Satella was alive 400+ years ago, it depends on how old is Emilia) OR Satella is mistaking Subaru with someone else (but that does not explain why Subaru remember his feelings for Satella… it would only make sense if Subaru could see her face, since it is said that Emilia reminds of the Witch of Envy that much…).

    Then… what? Is he the new Sage candidate? Why him? Why is everyone helping him? The only thing that is special in Subaru, even if it is harsh to say that, is that he come from another world and RBD… so why?
