        1. By doing it whenever I wanted to know what a Japanese text was saying hah, I got better at it and especially after I started translating.
          I use a translation tool to help me with all the vocabulary. Any vernacular/difficult words I search on a Japanese online vernacular dictionary(I basically then translate the dictionary entry!)
          Once I got good at it it’s not difficult at all, and the grammar makes sense.
          Then I double and tripe check everything to make sure I don’t make a mistake. After that I rewrite everything to be enjoyable to read in English, sometimes moving details from one sentence to another, without changing the meanings(except sometimes where necessary for reader’s understanding).

    You’re great! your translations are really good and you know how to convert emotions into your sentences and i can understand how hard it is since its from japanes and japanese is completely different than english what makes it hard to translate without losing the real meaning of it.

    But you’re doing an amazing job , because i can understand and follow the story perfectly.

    Thank you for your hard work and keep it up, but please dont overwork yourself.

    im really enjoying reading everyday your translations but i’d recommend doing it weekly and split a chapter in 2 instead of 6 (depends on the lenght of a chapter)
    So its probably easier for you to work on it and convey the emotions and meanings into your sentences since you have more time doing so 😀
    if you’ve got a good routine and are getting faster then you can probably do 1 chapter a week just like a weekly manga
    if you’re happy with the way you’re doing it now then of course there is no need to change 🙂

      I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

      I want to release daily so that everyone can have something to look forward to every day! It’ll take me the same amount to translate them all anyway, so might as well release it as soon as I finish a section.
      I know how bad it feels to not see updates for a few days, so I want to avoid that if possible.

      Each one of the segments take about 7 hours or so to get to a finished version… actually how did I even manage to do it so far? Haha it’s cutting into a bit of sleep time I guess.
      Some days when I have to go to work I won’t be able to release, but I’ll try to keep it at no less than one release every two days while I aim for one per day.

        But reading that you’re working like 7-8 hours on these segments i was worried about you overworking yourself and losing at some point your motivation.
        thats why i said it would be better doing it weekly
        BUT i see there is no need to worry because you need to love the Series very much so you can have fun doing that much work 🙂

        1. I am getting a bit faster, if I don’t get stumped by a segment like yesterday’s. My first drafts are smoother than they used to be. I’m translating the sentences positively right away, instead of literally translating the often negative structure of the original Japanese.
          Today’s segment is quite a bit shorter, so I’ll start on 6/6 once this one is done.

  10. Just one question, the interlude you started with, isn’t it the second one? I believe there’s an interlude prior to that called moments inside the dragon carriage, which is where Subaru first finds out about Rem’s fate. Did you skip it?

I believe he said he skipped it because he felt that the second one flowed better, along with the fact that apparently the third interlude apparently recalls all of what happened in the first through exposition so it was unnecessary. He did say he might go back and translate the first part if he gets ahead of schedule though.

    2. Interlude I is composed entirely of unimportant banter and cuts off right at the cliffhanger in the end. After I saw that it wasn’t included in the Anime, I re-read everything and felt the story continues more beautifully without it, since Interlude I is more suited as a cliffhanger ending than as a beginning.

      Interlude II draws the reader’s interest since it’s about Rem, who we haven’t seen since she left a few episodes ago, so everyone would be wondering. Then half way through it explodes into action. The storytelling and the action of Interlude II is just pure brilliance, and is set in flashback so there is no worry of missing information, so I think it’s a much better introduction to the WN than Interlude I.

      Interlude III then ties everything together from the end point of the Anime(including Interlude I) to the present moment, so no information is lost.

      2. I thought that was the best episode of anime I had ever seen. If you turn off subtitles and watch and listen to Sloth’s ranting, the fights, the character’s emotions and actions, oh man that was a truly impressive work of art. Then the ending, holding the shot for the whole dramatic music piece. I love it. When I finally make my wall art TV that will be one of the scenes it holds from time to time. The falling head and the falling snow, oh man, my brain trembles, I have to go watch it again.

    You’re doing me and all of the other Re:Zero fans that only speak English a HUGE favor. Seriously — without you, I would have to wait probably 5 years for Yen Press to translate the Light Novels, or wait 2 or so years for White Fox to make a season 2, assuming they will at some point. It included these instructions, “I would recommend throwing this ‘summary’ at someone who has a less meagre grasp of Japanese, an excess of free time, and a haritable personality and pestering them to rectify my fuckups.”

    On a completely unrelated note, do you think you could combine all of the different parts of each chapter into one post after you finish them? It seems like it’ll get awkward after awhile if each chapter remains split among a bunch of different posts.

    1. Oh thanks for that I’ll take a look! But I’ll still need to be reading through the Japanese word by word in the end to translate so not sure if a summary would help.

      I link the next section at the end of each release… maybe I should move the link to right after the divider to make it even easier to navigate!

      Right now the separate sections all have pictures which help the storytelling, might not feel as natural if its in the middle of a block of text.

  34. Hey quick question, I’ve learned Hiragana so far and lots of people say kanji is very difficult, so why is most Japanese text in Kanji? I go on the web novel sight and a lot is Kanji. (I believe)

    1. The Kanji characters have intrinsic meaning and makes reading-comprehension a lot easier…I think. It’s basically Chinese, where everything is Kanji. (Kanji is the Japanese word for “Chinese character” and the word itself is written in Chinese characters which is pretty funny)

    1. I recommend starting from Interlude II, the story progresses much more beautifully that way.
      Interlude I only contains banter and ends with a cliffhanger, which is good as a cliffhanger ending, but not good as a beginning. I think it will make a lot of people stop reading since there is no action in Interlude I.
      Interlude II does the reveal far better.
      Everything is explained in Interlude III, not Interlude I, so you won’t miss anything.

    1. If you can give me feed back after reading I’ll really appreciate it! I usually care more about effect than proper grammar though, but needless and unintentional mistakes I’ll fix!
      I have a pretty weird schedule so I usually release as soon as I’m satisfied with a translation, and then scramble for 10 minutes to fix any typos and missed words I suddenly noticed.

I know you have your hands full trying to translate each chapter in the first place, and I understand why you’re doing it in parts (so you can get out consistent releases), but when you are done with each chapter, why not combine the parts?   78. Anyone else here thinks that Satella give Subaru the Return to Death ability so that he can save Emilia from dying until the time comes that she can be Satella’s Vessel? What if it is really meant for Subaru to fall inlove to Emilia since Satella wants to be loved? therefore she is the best candidate to became a vessel…and then Emilia will become the ruler of Lugunica…do i make sense?

  119. I thought that last one seemed a bit long and although I loved it I think you should continue doing it in intervals. Otherwise others like myself will be thrown off and it gives us something to look forward to day by day instead of the longer wait. Either way keep up the awesome work.

  131. I don’t know if it’s appropriate but I largely preferred when you released chapters parts by parts, as we always have some ReZero content to have !

    But that’s only my opinion. Maybe some people actually prefer to wait 1 week to have something.

    Would you consider releasing chapters as you did in the past (less content but more often) ?
    Or will you continue to release entire chapters as you do it now (more content but less often) ?

    2. I think set release dates would be better, like everything you have once a week. My poor refresh button is wearing out. Then people won’t be hounding about when the next release is all the time. Honestly though, any way you want to do it works for me, just thankful for the chance to read ahead! Human beings need sleep, and although I wish that wasn’t so because sleep is overrated : ^ ) you guys need to try and make time for rest. Translating is something people get paid to do as a profession, and you guys have spent so much free time into doing this for us. Rest up so you don’t die, and make sure to take care of yourselves. Hey guys, I know everyone’s already been telling you to make sure you get some sleep and to not overwork yourselves, but I just wanted to give you some advice on how to manage this translation project. When I wanted to read the Shinsekai Yori original novel, I looked and looked for an English translation and could only find this one good fan-made one (b/c no official English one) here: http://shinsekai.cadet-nine.org/ .

    The translator on this project worked alone on translating what seems to be a ~500 page novel and was really only able to get through it by setting up a manageable schedule for it. They only translated like a single page a day until they were finally done, posting the day’s translations as they went. They would get some editing advice from other people posting comments on the post, too, so much of what they did was only translating a relatively small portion at once. I don’t really want to tell you how to do this, but I think an approach like this might be better for you guys; it would at least be more manageable and less stressful than what you seem to be doing currently.

    Based on a couple of your add-on comments to some of the chapters, you have spent more than once staying up very late trying to translate and edit a huge portion of text all at once, rather than breaking it up into smaller segments. I want you to think about maybe implementing a more manageable schedule system where you only work on it for an hour or two at most when you can, because this will quickly turn into something you don’t enjoy doing if you only do it in huge chunks and it starts impacting other areas of your life. Please think about maintaining your health and a healthy work/life balance so you don’t burn out and start resenting doing something that should be relatively fun and fulfilling. Get well soon.

      You’re quite right, I started translating because I enjoy it, and kept going because it was making people’s days a little happier and that made it all the more fun.
      When I feel tired it’s hard to focus and I really wasn’t sure if I could do a good job. But just know that I’ll always come back and keep going as long as there are people wanting to read.

      Page by page scheduled translation is quite a good idea. It’s given me an idea just now, I could release small chunks on Patreon as soon as I finish it, and then when there is enough for a segment I can then release them together on translationchicken.

      That Shinsekai Yori translation looks beautiful… I only watched half way through that anime years before. I’m going to start reading it I think!

    1. The Anime is based on the LN with some cuts. The Manga is not related to the the Anime, and is only based on the LN with some differences.
      The LN is based on the WN, and is almost identical. The plot is the same with some updates on details and generally shortened overall.

      The most significant change in Arc 3 was that two shorter WN Betelgeuse-battle loops were combined into one LN loop(the Episode 22 one), so Subaru died one less time. But this didn’t have an impact on the plot.

      1. This chapter is 5000 words and about 11 pages.
        I will release them together as a larger segment once I get there. But posting the pages as I go is quite nice.
        The translation still goes at the same speed, but working in smaller chunks helps me quite a bit, and I can post the progress s soon as a page is done :3

      2. Because it’s animated after the light novel, this one is the web novel. Even if they’re the same in content, the light novel is sold and needs some space to sell and incentive the market. If there was an anime so fast, there would be no need for a light novel to be serialized. The light novel isn’t far from where the Chicken is at already, too. Let’s speculate that in 2018 there would be enough space for a sequel if the studios sees fit.

    The first Interlude, in my opinion, is very important. After I caught up, I decided to read it to see what I missed out on and I desperately wished I read that first. As it is, you don’t read Interlude II with the sense of dread and uneasiness that the author intended because you don’t have that cliffhanger. People want the next chapter part ASAP, of course, and you already have a lot of work so I don’t think it’d be in anyone’s interests to have you translate it, but just linking to the version in the translation compilation (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ija_k96Y0lPBwF1cjdkLqtkEPNK573coXuxd3Htweag/edit) would do a lot of favors, I think. I know I desperately wish I read it first and feel rather unfortunate to not have.

With arc 4 alone being 100+ chapters I’m sure it will eventually get quite bothersome to scroll all the way down the 100 or so chapter links to see any sort of post that you do. For computers it may not be too much a problem but for mobile it will be hell I bet

  244. Hey nugget! Your drafts are improving greatly, almost can’t tell what needs to be improved apart from some really obvious mistakes that still can be understood with ease. Maybe you won’t need to be so concerned about the edits since the drafts getting better means that the edit will be easier and faster!
    I also worked as anime subtitle translator (to portuguese), and the first attemps took me 3-5 hours a full episode, but after a while I was taking 1-2 hours at higher quality and demanding every time less editing. So the tendency is to get better, and to not give up, sometimes 2-3 days at break and you’ll be missing the feeling of the thing.
    Just to let you know that your work, amazing from the very beginning, just keeps getting better. Don’t let the ever incresing amount of readers thirsty for more content and complaining somewhere get to you, they don’t mean any harm and just want to read more, like anyone else.
    Cheers, you make my day a lot better every time there`s a new draft or release up to read.

(reading the live draft). it’s possible roswaal was one of the archbishop of sin. this would make sense since it looks like he doesn’t want to confront/battle with the other archbishop thus a blackbook (probably a gospel 101%) in his possesion. and with that nature of his, he could be PRIDE.

    on the contrary. he may have been killed PRIDE. well this statement makes no sense for me. since i think subaru can’t use the black book but it looks like roswaal could use it. so i think that roswaal is another archbishop is possible.

    1. Roswaal, Roswaal… being a dick to Subaru was not probably a good idea, no matter what your Gospel tells you.
      He also said in was an improved version of what Cult has. Could it actually be SUBARU’s Gospel, the one describing his future or the right choices he has to take to survive?
      Roswaal clearly knew the kid will make it, but he doesn’t seam to know what he has been through to get there. Thus he probably doesn’t understand that making himself responsible for Rem’s sacrifice in Subaru’s eyes might be shooting himself in the leg in the long run.

I’m looking to see if I can find any fan translation of the light novel volume 3 but I haven’t found anything. I’m hesitant to go watch the anime as it sounds like it’s further then where I am and I vastly prefer to find out through reading rather than watching.

    1. I’ve tried to look into editing or deleting my post as my research has had me discover I’m still in the middle of Arc 2 or the beginning of the Light Novel Volume 3. Sadly I’ve been unable to but if anyone knows where a fan English translation for either Light Novel Volume 3 or Arc 2 are I’d appreciate learning.

    2. It is actually illegal to translate a light novel, as it is a published book. The light novel is the edited version and shorter version of the Web novel, which is free and not copyrighted. Try out the anime, it was really good :.)

    1. It’s not near the end, the WN is planned to be 11 arcs, it’s only at arc 6. The Anime took up the entirety of last year and the year before, it makes sense that Tappei would be busy.

      Tappei has repeatedly confirmed that the ReZero WN will continue. In his stickied post on his Twitter he is saying that he will continue writing the WN after he finishes the loads of work he has at the moment.
